Unsettling Echo from Sudan

Posted Nov 19, 2007 in the category.

The end seems far away in Sudan, almost when the sunshine of peace began to flicker the rays appear muted with tough talk, giving despair to the iota of hope in sight. According to BBC News Mr. Bashir the President of Sudan called on militias “to open training camps and gather mujahideen not for the sake of war but to be ready for anything.” I wonder what this is for, for some strange peace talk I guess?

Re: Chad/Sudan Orphans vs. Zoe's Ark

Posted Nov 7, 2007 in the category.

Peligat Christine is a volunteer for Zoe’s Ark and said during an interview with BBC News that the children were to be taken to France with the intention to find families for these children. She also claimed that they made some donation to Zoe’s Ark for this purpose. This statement to a very large extent contradicts the statement made by Zoe’s Ark, they claimed that they were to fly these children to France for medical treatment. The act of looking for families for these children in France does not sound like it is part humanitarian work. Maybe this is a different definition of humanitarian activities?

Chad Peace Deal

Posted Nov 7, 2007 in the category.

Chad peace deal looks like the real deal, and Ghaddafi seems to be very sure. According to AP news agency he is quoted to have said that “I hope this is the last stage in the peace process in Chad, and I guarantee all signatories will abide by the agreement”.

The conditions in the deal ( an immediate ceasefire by all the parties, amnesty for civil and military personnel and the release of all prisoners, the right to form political parties and to join the military and security forces) portends some success but how solid is the foundation of this accord? How long will it last? Time will tell and I can only wish for the best but “Ghaddafi’s Guarantee” is a bit too hasty.

The said deal brings some glimpse of hope for peace in the troubled state, but Ghaddafi’s guarantee can only prevail if there are no cracks in the agreement. What are the checks put in place to make sure that all the parties abide by their own promises? One can never be sure but lets hope that they will all live up to their words and signatures. The EU peacekeeping force would have been given a broader mandate in order for the Libya accord to survive. The mandate of the EU peacekeeping force is very narrow, technically I won’t be wrong to say that they are only coming as observers and not enforcers of peace.

Chad/Sudan Orphans vs. Zoe's Ark

Posted Oct 31, 2007 in the category.

I have been wondering if it is morally correct to attempt to fly out children in a conflict-ridden state on medical or whatever grounds. Let us presume it is possible, but can any organization resort to this act without complying with international law and ethics? The French Charity Zoe’s Ark seems to have gone a mile too far, in their charity towards the Chadian/Sudan supposedly orphans that were to be flown to France for medical assistance. If what we read and heard represents Zoe’s Ark action, one would wonder if all the organizations in Sudan/Chad should resort to flying the so-called orphans to France, UK, US or ….. no child would have been left in these countries. Lets hope that time will clarify this issue, the fact that French Police began investigating Zoe’s Ark prior to this incidence gives me some sort of feeling that Zoe’s Ark is not far from being culpable. What do you think?

Two faces of Ghaddafi

Posted Oct 30, 2007 in the category.

Ghaddafi playing out his Pan Arab sentiments in his push for African Unity, or he is merely using this platform to gain relevance both in Africa and in the West? There are two faces of Ghaddafi that does appear somewhat discordant. The other face is his very strong Arab sentiments and another is the sudden shift from that face. Maybe there is something hidden that is yet to be uncovered in all his moves.
